summary of the concept-conceptual core
-notion of surveillance in/and social networks
-self surveillance
-relation between analogue and digital data
-analogue to digital back to analogue
-balloon
question: how people submit themselves to be tracked and watched. willing to be a part of a social network with out fully knowing how much we are being watched. how cultural norms are shifted ..its normal to stalk ppl now.

rules of your game
-talk about loca
-surveillance in different countries
-people are willing to be put against each other...people are willing to stalk others. strangers against strangers. freely giving away info about themselves.

EVERYONE must find ONE reference related to our project and summarize it in 200 words. all of our references need to be compiled into one document by brianne.

Jobs:
Ryan- diagrams
Daniella - Presentation layout stuff
Erin- core concept
Brianne - Bibliography
Rich - Rules of the game - project description
Cristina- ideas around imagery and communication

Create about 1/2 a page to a page of point form notes on your section and email it to daniella so that i can put it into the presentation.

  • cold war-two sided game
  • war office track movement of other team\people who visit war office receive a balloon
  • movement of balloons will be reported
  • provide URL – people can upload photos regarding location
  • GOAL: misdirection- make people believe one thing while we’re using them for something else; they think they’re playing a game but we’re tracking their movement.
  • Two visualizations one in each room
  • Tactical but not war
  • Take the time – 5 hours - compress or expand
  • Have boards setup beforehand –not so reliant on people the day of
  • Give balloons- colours? Are they on the same team, what is their relationship?
  • Hook people in advance – keep the day open – don’t OVER hype

Questions to consider:

  • What is the story of the game we are in?
  • What are the goals?
  • Is it a search/competitive theme?
  • Is it an information game? Movement of information?
  • What is the structure?
  • What is the relation between the information and the street level?
  • Will it be expanded beyond dundas?
  • Is there a narrative?
  • Cooperative or competitive?

-How many points of location will there be?
-What is the minimum number of people to play the game?

  • 15-20 people
  • put up ads in advance
  • capture the flag Toronto – speak to people who have experienced city games

-As a participant in the game what is my relationship?

  • Incentive to playing the game
  • What is the advantage of me knowing someone else’s position?
  • If a see someone else with a balloon what do I do?
  • Currently there is  a pool of knowledge of other peoples positions – what is the motivation?
  • There is a need for rich narratives.

The Balloons are going to disappear!

  • Map cohesion
  • How are you going to keep us within the geography
  • Goal oriented
  • What is the relationship b/t the individual and the whole?

-Can I die? Can I live?
-How do these things fit into self-surveillance?
-Layers and narratives
-Individuals and wholes and relationship to the whole game
-Carriers of information – gather information that has meaning
-If there is no meaning or goal/motivation people will not want to play
-Make it playful – people should enjoy what they are doing

-Why am I going to carry a balloon?
-What are we doing once we get a balloon?

Suggestions from Peers:

-Numbering the balloons

  • Ability to track and map numbers

-Scavenger hunt – get people to move balloons in space while looking for things

-Have x number of positions, have clues on balloons, report back to war office once clues are solved to advance

-Have a message inside the balloons
